On moonlit nights down by the coast
men move like so many ghosts
some are nervous, some cloaked in fear
their all waiting for the signal...the coast is clear....
Night creatures on the marsh
Phantoms of the coast
watch the wall as they go by
'tis they that risk the most
Brandy for one and baccy for another
bales of silk and gin for your mother
the good vicar plots with Mipps the wise
so hail the Scarecrow and damn the excise
Night creatures on the marsh
Phantoms of the coast
watch the wall as they go by
'tis they that risk the most
All the King's redcoats, the locals sang
they couldn't stop the trade of the Romney Marsh gang
but on who's orders did they win
was it Captain Clegg or good old Dr Syn.....
Night creatures on the marsh
Phantoms of the coast
watch the wall as they go by
'tis they that risk the most
Night creatures on the marsh
Phantoms of the coast
watch the wall as they go by
'tis they that risk the most

Bluey

Today I'm a plumber and as you can see
a plumber's a tradesman of highest degree
some days are pleasant and some days are not
'cause some days you're covered in shit and in snot
Some say it's a good life but I'm telling you
it's the lead in the pipes that is turning me blue
the bluer I get the more it is said
it won't be too long before I am dead.............
Well I hate being a plumber there's more I could be
I could be a toff or run away to sea
but since I've no money and I hate getting wet
and I'm not going to prison for being in debt
I've found a way which is much calmer
I will become a baby farmer
but there's not much call for that in these parts
so I'll have to start by robbing from tarts
Now I'm a mutcher that's as far as I've sunk
I spend all my time robbing from drunks
they say I'm all bad and I ain't got a soul
but I'm not going to rot in Victoria's gaol
In our part of the city there isn't much light
the toffs in the west want to keep us from sight
but here in the streets of the east we do thrive
we rob and we steal just to stay alive.

By the light of a guttering candle he sat
his face set and grim
he could feel magnetic rays dancing in his head
why would no one listen to him........................
People were sent to make him worry
Glovewoman and Archie were in no hurry
acting on orders from Billy the King
the Jacobins built their infernal machine
James Tilly Matthews, he knew of the Air loom
James Tilly Matthews, now resigned to his doom
James Tilly Matthews, his head full of sadness
James Tilly Matthews, his head full of madness
In deep dank cellars the enemy hid
lurking in coffee houses as they did
releasing rays as their victims stood
to brainwash the important, the great and the good
James Tilly Matthews, he knew of the Air loom
James Tilly Matthews, now resigned to his doom
James Tilly Matthews, his head full of sadness
James Tilly Matthews, his head full of madness
The Air loom itself was of oak and brass
fed from barrels of a stinking morass
it could fire an idea right into your brain
or make you die in excruciating pain
James Tilly Matthews, he knew of the Air loom
James Tilly Matthews, now resigned to his doom
James Tilly Matthews, his head full of sadness
James Tilly Matthews, his head full of madness

Winter was a bad man, he came from a bad lot
eighteen years for petty crimes in prison cells left to rot
they hanged his brother before him
they hanged his father as well
but he didn't learn his lesson as he sat there in his cell
Winter was a cruel man, his temper it was hot
he murdered Margaret Crozier, stole everything she'd got
they hanged his brother before him
they hanged his father as well
now the hangman's sent his soul to a fiery hell
listen to my story
heed my warning well
as my body swings in the crisp cold air
my soul resides in hell
The Clark sisters were also hanged for their part in the crime
their bodies sent to surgeon's hall and damned for all time
they hanged his brother before him
they hanged his father as well
Winter's body now hangs in chains on a gibbet at Steng cross fell
listen to my story
heed my warning well
as my body swings in the crisp cold air
my soul resides in hell
William Winter, you have been found guilty of the heinous crime of murder,
you will be taken from here to a place of execution, where you will be hanged by the neck until you are dead,
and may God have mercy upon your soul.....................

Twisted Lip
03:27
|
|||
I knew a man with a twisted lip
who liked to give his missus the slip
he liked to wear false nose and frown
and go begging in London town
all the toff thought he was great
he rattled off prose at a fearsome rate
they would stop and listen to his sound
then they'd give him half a crown
His wife thought he was missing
Holmes and Watson thought he was pissing
his money up a gin palace wall
they didn't know where he was at all
when at last they brought him to book
they all had to take a second look
he didn't look like her husband at all
a twisted lip and not so tall
He had made a lot of cash
now he had quite a big stash
it earned him quite a few bob
it was better than a job
his disguise it was complete
when he took to the streets
and now his story can be seen
serialised in Strand Magazine
I knew a man with a twisted lip
who liked to give his missus the slip
he liked to wear false nose and frown
and go begging in London town
all the toff thought he was great
he rattled off prose at a fearsome rate
they would stop and listen to his sound
then they'd give him half a crown.....that's more than I earn in a week....cor, what a bloody cheek!

Newgate
03:28
|

There is a place of fear and loathing
with ragged people in ragged clothing
cross the threshold at your cost
for in Newgate prison you're one of the lost
With a family starving, it is said
to steal a loaf you'll wind up dead
in a halter and cart they'll make you ride
and at Tyburn tree your fate resides
To escape from this place you will need
Jack Shepards' advice or by wooden steed
Jack Ketch is waiting with a rope in his hand
and then you'll join the ranks of the damned.

Dr Dexter's Dream
03:34
|
|||
Dexter sat by his fire
as the flames were about to expire
fogged notions appeared in his mind
some unseemly at best unkind
He saw wars so bad
now a people oh so sad
factories gone, the land now sold
shipyards gone and the furnaces cold
Britannia had ruled the waves
now her people are economic slaves
bankers, politicians, a new world order
spiralling prices and people getting poorer
When he awoke his eyes were damp
outside a glow from a tall gas lamp
what visions did he see
on this August night in 1914......
The lanterns are going out all over Europe, we shall not see them lit again in our lifetime.......

Sahara's sun hot unabated
the expedition was cursed and fated
Lord Carnarvon's fortune and dreams
lay scattered in the desert it seems......
At last a breakthrough was reached
Tutankhamun's tomb was finally breached
place was abandoned by the superstitious
the curse of the boy King was cruel and vicious.....
It was a fly bite, or was it worse
Pharaoh had the last laugh with his curse
his last gasp as Carnarvon fell
his dying words "I feel like hell".....
21 dead on swift wings
for those who disturb the peace of the Kings
this warning was written on his tomb
the curse of the Pharaoh will get you soon.....
